Which Engine Oil Is Best for UAE Summer Heat?

Engine oils for hot UAE weather: Shell Helix HX8, Castrol EDGE, Mobil Super, Liqui Moly Molygen and Castrol Magnatec

When it’s 45°C outside and you’re stuck in traffic with the AC on full, it’s natural to wonder whether your engine oil can cope. A common piece of advice in the UAE is “use a thicker oil in summer”. Sometimes that’s right, but often it isn’t. Here’s how to choose the right oil for your car.

What the numbers on the bottle mean

An oil grade such as 5W-30 has two parts:

  • The number before the W (for “winter”) shows how easily the oil flows when the engine is cold. Lower means it flows faster at start-up.
  • The number after the dash shows how thick the oil stays once the engine is at its normal working temperature. Higher means thicker.

So a 20W-50 is thicker than a 5W-30, both when cold and when hot.

Does UAE heat mean you need a thicker oil?

Not automatically. Your engine’s cooling system keeps it at roughly the same working temperature in July as in January, so the oil inside isn’t 45°C hotter just because the weather is. What the UAE climate does do is put the oil under more stress:

  • long idling and stop-and-go traffic with little cooling airflow
  • extra load from the air conditioning
  • fine dust and sand getting into the engine air
  • many short trips where the engine never fully warms up

That stress is a reason to use a good-quality oil of the correct grade and to change it on time. It isn’t a reason to switch to a thicker grade than your car’s maker recommends. Modern engines have narrow oil passages and parts like variable valve timing that are designed around a specific grade. An oil that’s too thick can reach them more slowly after start-up and may add fuel consumption.

Step 1: Check your owner’s manual

The manual (or the oil filler cap on some cars) tells you two things. Both matter:

  • The viscosity grade, for example 5W-30 or 5W-40. Some manuals list more than one grade depending on climate. In the UAE, pick the one listed for hot conditions.
  • The specification or approval, for example API SP, ACEA A3/B4, MB 229.5, BMW Longlife-01 or VW 502 00 / 505 00. European cars in particular often need an oil with the maker’s own approval.

If an oil has the right grade but not the right approval, it isn’t the right oil for that car.

Step 2: Match the oil to your engine

As a rough guide to what drivers here commonly need, with oils we stock as examples:

Your car Grade usually specified Examples in our shop
Older petrol or diesel engines whose manual specifies 20W-50 20W-50 Mobil Super 1000 20W-50, Toyota Genuine 20W-50
Many Japanese and Korean petrol cars 5W-30 Mobil Super 5W-30, MAG Prima Extreme 5W-30
BMW petrol engines requiring Longlife-01 5W-30 (BMW LL-01) BMW TwinPower Turbo 5W-30
Mercedes-Benz engines requiring MB 229.5 5W-40 (MB 229.5) Mercedes-Benz StarParts 5W-40
Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Škoda petrol engines requiring VW 502 00 / 505 00 5W-40 (VW 502 00 / 505 00) Special G 5W-40
Other petrol engines specifying 5W-40 5W-40 Shell Helix HX8 5W-40, Liqui Moly Molygen 5W-40, Idemitsu IFG 3 5W-40
Petrol engines specifying 10W-40 10W-40 Castrol Magnatec 10W-40
High-performance petrol engines that specifically call for 10W-60 10W-60 Castrol EDGE 10W-60

This table is only a starting point. Always confirm the grade and approval for your exact engine before buying.

Step 3: Change it on time, and check the level

  • Follow the service interval in your manual. Many manuals give a shorter “severe conditions” schedule for heat, dust, heavy traffic and short trips. That describes a lot of everyday driving in the UAE, so check whether it applies to you.
  • Check the oil level about once a month with the engine off and the car on level ground. Some engines use a little oil between changes, and running low is worse than any grade choice.
  • Change the oil filter with the oil. Fresh oil through an old filter doesn’t get the full benefit.

Signs your oil needs attention

  • the oil warning light comes on
  • the level on the dipstick is at or below the minimum mark
  • the engine sounds louder or more “tappy” than usual, especially at start-up
  • you’re past the date or distance on your last service sticker

If the oil warning light comes on while driving, stop safely and check the level before going further.
